Chaab'il B'e Lodge and Casitas is located in Toledo District, the southernmost part of Belize. We are 9 miles from Punta Gorda Town which is on the seafront of the Bay of Honduras. Water taxis go from Punta Gorda to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala daily, making our location perfect for individual travelers moving on through Central America. Our lodge is right off the main paved highway down a 300 meter driveway lined with coconut palms and forest - a birding experience in itself. Self-drive in is easy, as is bus and get off at the Jacintoville Junction. Tropic and Maya Island Air land in Punta Gorda Town and pick up can be arranged if a quick flight from Belize International is preferred.
Our name, Chaab'il B'e, means good trail in Q'eqchi' Maya. We invite you to come bird our beautiful trails whether creekside, through the tropical forest or around the 3 acres of gardens full of heliconias, gingers, orchids and flowering trees. Rufous-breasted Spine-tail, Black-crowned Antshrike, White-necked Puffbird, and Band-tailed Barbthroat are some of the 242 species seen around the property. The lodge is centrally located in the Toledo District giving easy access to the many birding hotspots like Dump, where raptors soar and wading birds like Purple and Common Gallinule live, or Aguacaliente lagoon where Jabiru and Roseate Spoonbills hang out. Please, check our drone footage link.
Chaab'il B'e Lodge is an easy access birding lodge offering comfortable accommodations in beautiful surroundings. We operate as a B&B so full American breakfast is served daily with early morning coffee available for birders. Dinner is available by reservation. Free WIFI around the property and there is communal space for checking out bird books and working on lists in the second floor dining room. From there, bird watchers can enjoy panoramic views of the gardens and see what species are visiting the cohune palm birdfeeder. Laundry service is available as is boot or gear cleaning. Experienced local bird guides can come and bird on the property with you and ride along or provide transport to other hotspots. All visiting birders are welcome to join the Toledo Birding Club on the last Sunday of any month at no cost to bird the hotspot of the month. Also, from October 1 to December 15 each year, Cattle Landing, Toledo District is the home of the Hawk Watch Project, studying migration of raptors. This is another free opportunity for visiting birders to spend a little time with some of the best birding guides in Belize doing their thing for conservation in Belize. The Project is run by the Belize Bird Conservancy and any support for BBC, if you get to visit the Project, is more than welcome.
There are 4 main lodge rooms and 5 thatched eco-style casitas. The lodge rooms have the option of A/C and have cable TV, ceiling fans and hot showers. The casitas each have 2 walls with screening from 4 feet up to allow for birding while in your casita(even in the shower). They have ceiling fans and hot water showers. There is a variety of bedding in our rooms, from king size to singles, with most rooms having at least 2 beds per room.
