La Claverie Guesthouse
Region: Atlantic coast, Marais Poitevin
We speak: English, Français, Español
La Claverie is a well-established guest house ideally located within a short distance of many local birdwatching spots: just 20 minutes drive from La Rochelle and 15 minutes from the Atlantic coast. Aiguillon Bay (at 10,000 ha, the largest natural reserve of the French Atlantic coast) is just 10 minutes from the guesthouse. Marais Poitevin, Rochefort-sur-Mer and Ré Island are also within easy reach, along with LPO/BirdLife France reserves at Lilleau-des-Niges, Moëze-Oléron, Saint-Denis-du-Payré and Yves Bay. Marie and Philippe (she is a biologist and he is an avid birdwatcher and travel bird guide - who have authored 60 books about nature and wildlife in Europe and elsewhere) will be happy to assist all of your birding needs. They offer their guests car transfers from La Rochelle airport or train station (TGV).
La Claverie affords great opportunities to see a large variety of birds throughout the year: ducks, geese, cranes, waders and short-eared owls winter in the bay. During spring, thousands of birds coming from Africa visit the mudflats to feed and rest, including spoonbills, ospreys, waders and terns. Among the numerous nesting birds, we have white stork, Kentish plover, whiskered and black terns, little and Scops owls, nightjar, tawny pipit and bluethroat. Then, from the middle of august until the end of October, thousands of cuckoos, swallows, goldfinches, greenfinches, linnets, buntings and warblers migrate every day through “La Pointe de l’Aiguillon”, where a migration camp is organised for three months each year. For photographers, we provide five hides on a private farm, allowing you to shoot close-ups of white stork, common kestrel, black kite, buzzard, black-winged stilt, redshank and many more species. Guided bird tours can be organised on request.
La Claverie offers four very comfortable and clean rooms – with double or twin beds – each with ensuite bathroom and toilet. Our accommodation has free Wi-Fi, a nice lounge, a large garden (lovely for outdoor dining), a spacious dining room and a secure car park. Marie and Philippe can offer you full board stays, including breakfast, picnic and fabulous dinners (in a previous life, Philippe was a chef…) with wines and beers included. Then, after dinner, you can also enjoy a game of pool.
