On 13 November 2019, a juvenile Grey Phalarope Phalaropus fulicarius has been spotted on the northern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria where five years ago Branta Birding Lodge started our joint Bed and Birding venture. This phalarope breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia, and normally migrates south to South America and South Africa, well out to sea. The depressions currently bringing heavy rain and floods to Western and Central Europe could have driven this bird off course. Pavel Simeonov was lucky enough to photograph the wanderer, only the second record for Bulgaria. He said that this part of the Bulgarian coast is famous for the occurrence of many rare birds each spring and autumn and eagerly awaits what surprises each season will bring next!
