Region: Great Hungarian Plain, Kiskunság national park
We speak: English, Français, Magyar
Web site: http://www.bugacpusztalodge.be/
Location: Our lodge tents are located in Bugacpusztaháza, one-hour drive from the Hungarian capital of Budapest, 30 miles away from the Danube river and 60 miles from the famous lake Balaton - the largest lake in Central Europe. The neighbouring Kiskunság national park, inaugurated in 1975, is one of the oldest in the country and protects a great array of habitats, each with their specific birdlife: sand dunes, shallow alkaline lakes, fishponds, forest, agricultural land,… It does not take much effort to visit these areas, where a lot of observation huts and towers are freely accessible.
Services: We collaborate with some experienced English speaking local guides, to offer high quality bird watching trips in the area, but also other aspect can be focused upon (butterflies, plants, mammals,…). Hungary is an important ringing country in Europe and a visit to the local bird ringing station is of special interest where you can experience how ringing is done. Here you can easily find lots of puszta species, e.g. bee-eaters, rollers, hoopoes, orioles, red-footed falcons… The national park is one of the most important breeding sites of great bustard in Europe, and our guides just happen to know where to find them, thanks to an important monitoring program. It’s also a key habitat for several raptors and, with luck, you can also spot a saker falcon. White-tailed and imperial eagle just make the area more worthwhile. Collared pratincole and stone curlew are among notable waders of interest. Photo tours or canoeing on the oxbow lakes around river Tisza are possible on request.
Guestrooms: Our 2 lodgetents offer comfortable accommodations for up to 5 people each. Each tent is equipped with open kitchen, bathroom, living room, 2 bedrooms and terrace. From the terrace, bee-eaters and orioles are daily seen and in the evening, your diner is enlightened by the songs of nightingale and nightjar, while almost daily the cries of the golden jackal can be heard close-by. For every booking, we offer the first diner and first breakfast, just to avoid that you have to drive tot he supermarked immediately after arrival. Just sit back and enjoy, that’s our motto!
